Esophageal Manometry Study
(print this page out to keep it handy)

The Esophageal Manometry procedure is a study of the muscle contraction and coordination of your esophagus. This study is often performed before and after medical or surgical treatment of the esophagus.

The study is performed by placing a small tube-like probe through the nose and into the stomach. The tube is connected to a computer displaying the amount of pressure placed on the tube in different sections of the esophagus. The tube is slowly extracted and pressure readings are taken during certain time intervals. You will be asked to swallow water periodically throughout the study to examine how muscles interact.

General Instructions:

  1. Please read the enclosed pamphlet regarding Esophageal Manometry.
  2. Per the instructions in the attached pamphlet, discontinue all listed medications/drugs for 48 hours prior to the study.
  3. If you are on nitroglycerine, calcium channel blockers or beta blockers, please contact your physician to determine if you should discontinue taking these drugs 48 hours prior to your study.
  4. Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours before the study.
  5. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

5. Expect to be at the Endoscopy Center for 2-2 1/2 hours.

  1. Please contact your physician with any additional questions or concerns.
