LIVER BIOPSY INSTRUCTIONS
(print this page out to keep it handy)

(CT guided)

Ultrasound guided

Your doctor has determined that you should undergo a liver biopsy. This is a procedure that allows us to sample your liver tissue and evaluate it under microscope.

The biopsy is done in the interventional radiology department at Crouse Hospital. The interventional Radiologist uses image guidance with ultrasound to determine the exact location of the needle within the liver hence allowing for greater accuracy and fewer associated complications. Your blood has already been checked and has been determined to clot satisfactorily.

The biopsy itself takes about 15 minutes. Your skin will be cleansed with an iodine solution and numbed (like Novocain at the dentist). The Interventional Radiologist will then use a biopsy needle to obtain the liver specimens. Generally two or three specimens are obtained. Patients usually stay one to two hours. You may eat lunch, read or watch television as you recover. You will only be allowed to use a bedpan or urinal to urinate, so remember to do this before the biopsy.

The chances of a complication occurring are small; the most common problem is temporary pain at the site. More serious complications, such as bleeding, infection, leakage of bile, or puncturing lung or colon are very uncommon, and are usually apparent within the 1 to 2 hour observation period.

ONE WEEK BEFORE THE BIOPSY:

Do not take aspirin, aspirin-containing medication, or any aspirin-related drugs (such as Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, etc.).

THE MORNING OF THE BIOPSY:

Eat a light breakfast (coffee, tea, toast, NO MILK or MILK products.)

You will be given further instructions after the biopsy, but you should plan on resting the remainder of the day and evening of the biopsy. You should not do any strenuous physical activity for at least two (2) days after, and you should not take any aspirin or related medications for at least five (5) days after.

YOU WILL NEED TO ARRANGE TRANSPORTATION HOME AFTER THE PROCEDURE.

If there are any questions, call our office at 470-7966 or 470-7755.
